create a way to qc an outgoing email from an Event (invitation)

The only way I have figured out how to qc my email event invitation (with merge fields and format) is to create a marketing effort and test the effort.

I would say, not just for e-mail. The only way to export the mailing list in the invitation area is to use the Send Invitaiton process that then adds the communication to the invitees records. We would like there to be a way to export the invitation list without sending it but then have something like an "Activate" step like with Direct Marketing Efforts.
